African Americans for the Arts
Aisha Lumumba
I work very diligently to reflect my great African heritage as well as the
ups and downs of our American experience in my unique picture quilts.
I never planned to be an artist. I simply loved participating in any
procedure where I used my hands. I found my interest leaning towards
fabrics and the way textiles spoke to me in a musical voice. The colors,
designs and textures of fabrics move in and out with a special rhythm.
I strive to capture that musical movement with every piece I create.
I reflect that movement in my quilts and outwardly in my own voice
through my quilt stories. I love to create traditional quilt patterns as
well as contemporary and art designs. I love experimenting with many
different techniques in an attempt to expand my skill level.
